Food Photography – How to Make Your Aperitivo Insta-Perfect

Part of the allure of food is how it looks… and it can look really, really, really good in photos. Mastering the art of food photography is based on a few simple rules and techniques. We spoke with Sally O’Neil, founder of The Fit Foodie, who shared some tips to help you wow your friends and gain more followers.

Think about the light

Photography is about light. No matter where you are or what you are shooting, the light will make or break your shot. Natural light is always the best. Is the sun rising in the east, or setting in the west? Can you switch on a light, draw the curtains – more light produces better results, just make sure you’re not standing in the way!

To diffuse strong light, you can hang a thin bedsheet across the window, or invest in some cheap scrim. Both will give you a beautiful glow to your images that can’t be replicated in electric light.

Hint: Aperitivo Hour is at sunset, so try holding your Aperol Spritz up to the light and snap a perfect pic of its iconic orange hue.

The “Rule of Thirds”

This is a classic shot composition technique – dividing the screen into thirds, creating a grid of nine squares with four intersections. Try to keep the image content in only one or two thirds rather than filling the entire frame. Most smartphones can add a grid overlay to your camera app, which makes it really easy.

Servingware

Invest in some gorgeous organic-shaped servingware, which can food look so beautiful without having to do much at all. Plain whites and off-whites, or simple designs are the best to bring out the colour of your Aperitivo scene and Aperol Spritz.

Flat lay

Flat lay is a go-to shot style for food photography and is prevalent across Instagram and high-end food magazines. Position your camera directly above your scene – complete with Aperol Spritz, antipasto platter and decorations on a clean board or table – for a perfect overview of your Aperitivo occasion.

Symmetry

There’s symmetry everywhere in nature, just look in the mirror! Try and balance the subjects of your perfect shot.

Lines and shapes

Look for lines and shapes in your shot. These details can provide the perfect background to your hero subject, adding a layer of detail without stealing the focus.

There’s an app for that

There are many camera and photo editing apps and filters that can give your skills a boost – apart from Instagram, try VSCO or Whitagram. Experiment until you find some go-to effects that bring out the best in your Aperitivo occasion.
